Visitor Experience Officer, Gloucester Cathedral

Visitor Experience Officer, £21,546 – £26,157 per annum

Gloucester Cathedral is one of the most significant heritage destinations in the South West. A historic place of worship which dates its origins back over 1,300 years, we remain open for everyone, 365 days a year and continue to hold services four times a day, every day. A sacred and holy place, a source of local pride and a site of rich history, the Cathedral remains an important focus for the City and County.

But this isn’t heritage preserved in aspic; the Cathedral is a living, breathing building full of activity which is made possible by over 50 staff and an army of 450 volunteers. We welcome over 400,000 visitors a year from all over the world and hold hundreds of events every year, ranging from skate parks and nationally acclaimed exhibitions, to Christmas markets and medieval days. We are also nearing completion of a once-in a-generation £6m project to develop the site into a truly 21st Century Cathedral which provides its visitors with a world-class welcome.

This is where you come in. We have an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to take the lead on group visits to the Cathedral. A key part of our visitor-base and income, we welcome over 500 groups every year, ranging from international students to local interest groups. This crucial audience has been identified as a key area for growth and the timing is right for a Visitor Experience Officer to develop and drive a group visitor strategy to increase visitor numbers and improve the visitor experience. This is a brand new role and we’ll need you to use your enthusiasm, creativity and exceptional customer service skills to ensure that every group visitor leaves the Cathedral having had the best possible experience.

As the Visitor Experience Officer for Gloucester Cathedral, you’ll be accountable for the day-to-day co-ordination of the group visits process: from tour package design, promotion and enquiries to bookings, delivery and evaluation. You’ll also play a key part in managing the busy front of house operations, particularly in relation to arrangements for tours and providing a world class welcome for group visitors. . You’ll be working closely with dedicated volunteers and will be responsible for ensuring they feel supported and confident in their work.

We’ll be checking your application to make sure that you have experience of working (or volunteering) in a customer facing environment, charitable organisation or visitor attraction, and experience of working with volunteers.  In addition, you’ll need to demonstrate that you are equally brilliant at building relationships, delivering against targets and providing efficient administration. Perfect for a graduate or people with equivalent experience, we seek a candidate who can grow and develop with this role and who is excited by the opportunity to make a real difference to the Cathedral and its visitors.

The Visitor Experience Officer is a full time post of 35 hours per week, working 5 days per week, and who will be required to work some Saturdays.

Closing date is 9am on Monday 20th November and interviews will be on Monday 27th November.

To submit your application please email Alice Clark, HR Adviser, aclark@glosdioc.org.uk with your completed application form before the closing date.

Please note that CVs are not acceptable.
